Today, Sunday, September 7, the Moon will turn red. This is a total eclipse that will reach its maximum at 8:13 PM when it will also be visible in Italy. The phenomenon will be observable with the naked eye, but binoculars or a small telescope can help better capture the shades of color on the lunar surface, weather permitting. The expected duration of the totality phase is 82 minutes, during which the sky will be tinged with blood. The “Blood Moon” will be visible from Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, western North America, eastern South America, the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans, the Arctic, and Antarctica.

This singular and evocative phenomenon inspired me to re-propose, even in a short video, a work I dedicated to the “Blood Moon” (the Red Moon). The piece is a collage; it has a diameter of 79 centimeters and was created on a round table, precisely to evoke the same shape as the moon. As in all my collage works, the artwork is all done with waste paper from torn and decomposed advertising posters.

The compositional process is articulated in the phase of de-construction of the paper material (collected at the billboards) and its re-composition in a unitary scene using small pieces of waste paper. The theme of the round collage is dedicated to the red moon and its eclipse. I imagined that the Moon, the satellite that has always lived in symbiosis with the Earth (and the Earth with the Moon) in its becoming red vivified the Earth and gave it vitality, color, light and energy. I liked playing on the contrast between dark and light, between dark and colored papers, in a wave of colors that recalls the movement of the works of vorticism.

Domenica 7 settembre la Luna diventerà rossa. Si tratta di un’eclissi totale che raggiungerà il suo massimo alle 20:13 quando sarà visibile anche in Italia. Il fenomeno sarà osservabile a occhio nudo ma un binocolo o un piccolo telescopio possono aiutare a cogliere meglio le sfumature di colore sulla superficie lunare, sempre meteo permettendo. La durata prevista per la fase di totalità è di 82 minuti durante i quali il cielo di tingerà di color sangue. La “Luna di sangue” sarà visibile da Europa, Asia, Africa, Australia, Africa, America settentrionale occidentale, America meridionale orientale, Oceani Pacifico, Atlantico e Indiano, Artico e Antartide. Questo fenomeno singolare e suggestivo mi ha ispirato a riproporre, anche in un breve video, un’opera che ho dedicato alla “Luna di Sangue” (la Luna Rossa). L’opera è un collage; ha un diametro di 79 centimetri ed è stata realizzata su un tavolo rotondo, proprio per evocare la stessa forma della luna. Come in tutti i miei lavori a collage, l’opera è interamente realizzata con carta di scarto proveniente da manifesti pubblicitari strappati e decomposti.

Il processo compositivo si articola nella fase di de-costruzione del materiale cartaceo (raccolto presso i cartelloni) e nella sua ricomposizione in una scena unitaria utilizzando piccoli pezzi di carta di scarto. Il tema del collage rotondo è dedicato alla luna rossa e alla sua eclissi. Ho immaginato che la Luna, il satellite che da sempre vive in simbiosi con la Terra (e la Terra con la Luna), nel suo divenire rosso vivificasse la Terra e le donasse vitalità, colore, luce ed energia. Mi è piaciuto giocare sul contrasto tra chiaro e scuro, tra carte scure e colorate, in un’onda di colori che richiama il movimento delle opere del vorticismo.
