THE ROSES OF THE YEAR 2022/23

This is my submission for Roses of The Year 2022, a soft focus abstract created from one of my photographs of a rose bush in my garden. This soft focus abstract photograph is dedicated to the memory of Queen Elizabeth II, herself a lover of roses.  The image is representative of both her soft, caring nature, as well as strong, resilient character.

My own artwork progresses from preliminary studies (pencil, charcoal, oil pastel, watercolour and photographic) into oil, acrylic and mixed media  paintings on canvas and panel, as well as oil and acrylic mono prints.  Emphasis is placed on repetition of line and colour, to create rhythm within my landscape, flora and fauna paintings.  At times, I change the chiaroscuro to heighten the contrast of light and shade; creating drama and depth; at others, softening and flattening the   space, creating…
