What would our childhood have been like without Hans Christian Andersen's stories (read or listened to)? It is a question that I ask myself here in Copenhagen, on the traces of the testimonies left by the great author of "The Little Match Girl" or "The Ugly Duckling". 
I think it would have been a poorer childhood, even in an educational and cultural sense. Even today, without Andersen's stories, our childhood world would have less stimulus and motivation. And here, in the capital of the Kingdom of Denmark, you can really see in filigree the soul of the great author who was able to renew the modalities of the story and invent the contemporary fairy tale. 
Andersen does not rely on the images of witches and sorcerers, but draws on the stories of people who live in the difficulties of the countryside and urban villages. And he takes a lot from himself, from his life as a boy mocked and harassed - yes, he was a victim of what we now call bullying - and from the dire circumstances of an existence that was not at all easy. 

But he dreamed. He looked up at the sky, as depicted in the monument that was erected for him in the heart of Copenhagen, next to City Hall. And he will play, throughout his life, to deny the terrible and absurd statement addressed to him by the director of the school: “You are a stupid boy. You will never do anything good ”.
Even the masters are wrong. Luckily. And Hans Christian will not be misunderstood for long. Today we recognize Andersen as the creative genius who made entire generations dream. Copenhagen rightly celebrates it, with statues, squares and tombstones. And by concretely promoting school, education, culture and reading. Not for nothing, in memorials, he is always represented with a book in his hands. Because a book makes us free.

Che infanzia sarebbe stata, la nostra, senza le storie ( lette od ascoltate) di Hans Christian Andersen? È una domanda che mi faccio qui a Copenaghen, sulle tracce delle testimonianze lasciate dal grande autore de “La Piccola Fiammiferaia” o de “Il Brutto Anatroccolo”. Penso sarebbe stata un’infanzia più povera, anche in senso educativo e culturale. Anche oggi, senza i racconti di Andersen, il nostro mondo infantile avrebbe meno stimoli e motivazioni. E qui, nella capitale del Regno di Danimarca, si può davvero leggere in filigrana l’animo del grande autore che ha saputo rinnovare le modalità del racconto ed inventare la fiaba contemporanea. Andersen non fa leva sulle immagini di streghe e stregoni, ma attinge alle storie della gente che vive nelle difficoltà delle campagne e dei borghi urbani. E prende molto da se stesso, dalla sua vita di ragazzo deriso e vessato – sì, fu vittima di ciò che noi oggi definiamo bullismo- e dalle infauste circostanze di un’esistenza per niente facile. Ma lui sognava. Guardava in alto, il cielo, come raffigurato nel monumento che gli è stato eretto nel cuore di Copenaghen,a fianco della City Hall. E giocherà, per tutta la vita, a smentire la terribile ed assurda affermazione rivoltagli dal direttore della scuola: “Sei un ragazzo stupido. Non farai mai nulla di buono”.

Anche i maestri sbagliano. Per fortuna. E Hans Christian non resterà a lungo incompreso. Noi oggi riconosciamo in Andersen il genio creativo che ha fatto sognare intere generazioni. Copenaghen giustamente lo celebra, con statue, piazze e lapidi. E promuovendo concretamente la scuola, l’educazione, la cultura e la lettura. Non per niente, nei monumenti commemorativi, lui è sempre rappresentato con un libro tra le mani. Perché un libro rende liberi. #copenhagen#hanschristianandersen#danimarca#letteratura
