The architectural and environmental structure of the Terme di Montecatini is a Unesco World Heritage Site. This was established by the session of the 44th UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Fuzhou, China.

The Committee recognized the site of the Great Spa Towns of Europe, consisting of 11 cities in 7 states – Montecatini Terme in Italy, Baden bei Wien in Austria, Spa in Belgium, Františkovy Lázně, Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně in the Czech Republic, Vichy in France, Bad Ems, Bad Kissingen Baden Baden in Germany and the City of Bath in the United Kingdom – as an exceptional testimony of the spa culture, a specifically European phenomenon that had its maximum expression from the 18th to the 30s of the 20th century .

“The Great Thermal Cities of Europe” represent an important interchange of innovative ideas that have given impetus to progress in the field of medicine and balneology and to the increase in recreational activities through the enhancement of natural springs and the development of cities, neighborhoods, parks, architecture and infrastructure dedicated to health and leisure, influencing the development and popularity of spa towns throughout Europe and other parts of the world.

The candidacy, coordinated for Italy by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Permanent Representation of Italy in Paris and with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and promoted by the Municipality of Montecatini Terme, is the result of the synergistic collaboration between the institutions and the experts deployed by the various countries involved who will find themselves working together to manage this heritage of global importance in terms of its conservation and enhancement.

The path was started in 2009. It is a transnational serial registration with 11 European spa towns, Montecatini is the only Italian one, all of which become world heritage sites as thermal realities with common characteristics, such as architectural beauty, ‘having been developed mainly between 1700 and 1900, but also aspects of well-being, leisure and psychophysical recovery thanks to the thermal baths. Italy is the country with the largest number of Unesco heritage sites. The inclusion of Montecatini Terme is an extraordinary opportunity for the city and for the entire spa heritage.

La struttura architettonica ed ambientale delle Terme di Montecatini è patrimonio mondiale dell’Unesco. Lo ha stabilito la sessione del 44esimo Comitato del Patrimonio Mondiale Unesco tenutasi a Fuzhou, in Cina. Il Comitato ha riconosciuto il sito delle Grandi città termali d’Europa, composto da 11 città in 7 Stati – Montecatini Terme in Italia, Baden bei Wien in Austria, Spa in Belgio, Františkovy Lázně, Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně nella Repubblica Ceca, Vichy in Francia, Bad Ems, Bad Kissingen Baden Baden in Germania e Città di Bath nel Regno Unito – quale eccezionale testimonianza della cultura termale, un fenomeno specificatamente europeo che ha avuto la sua massima espressione a partire dal XVIII fino agli anni ’30 del XX secolo.

“Le Grandi Città termali d’Europa” rappresentano un importante interscambio di idee innovative che hanno dato impulso a progressi nel campo della medicina e della balneologia e all’incremento delle attività ricreative attraverso la valorizzazione delle sorgenti naturali e lo sviluppo di città, quartieri, parchi, architetture e infrastrutture dedicati alla salute e al tempo libero, influenzando lo sviluppo e la popolarità delle città termali in tutta Europa e in altre parti del mondo.

Il percorso è stato avviato nel 2009. E’ un’iscrizione seriale transnazionale con 11 città termali europee, Montecatini è l’unica italiana, che diventano tutte patrimonio mondiale dell’umanità in quanto realtà termali con caratteristiche comuni, come la bellezza architettonica, l’essere state sviluppate prevalentemente tra il 1700 e il 1900, ma anche aspetti di benessere, svago e recupero psicofisico grazie alle terme. L’Italia è il Paese con il maggior numero di patrimoni Unesco. L’inserimento di Montecatini Terme è una straordinaria occasione per la città e per l’intero patrimonio termale.
