Celebrations in honor of the centenary of the death of Antoni Gaudí (1926-2026) have officially begun in Barcelona. The city, which has always borne witness to the uniqueness of the great architect, becomes the stage for a universal commemoration of the Catalan artist who disappeared under incredible circumstances: he was hit by a tram on June 7, 1926, and left in agony on the side of the road, dying three days later.

The Sagrada Familia, with the final building of the Tower of Jesus Christ, will mark the completion of Antoni Gaudí’s iconic work (for whom a cause for beatification is open due to the spirituality of his art).But other sites in the Catalan metropolis will also pay tribute to the great architect’s genius. These include Casa Batlló and Casa Pedrera on the central Paseo de Gracia. The phantasmagorical Park Güell and the lesser-known Casa Vicens, the Güell Textile Colony, and the Crypt, “Gaudí’s best-kept secret,” are fascinating spaces where the ideas of artistic modernism and Art Nouveau are brought to their highest expression.

The epicenter of the events will obviously be the Sagrada Familia, which, once the Tower of Jesus Christ is completed, will become the tallest church in Europe and the world. With the recent installation of part of the cross, it has already surpassed Ulm Cathedral, becoming the tallest church in the world at 162.91 meters, although its final height—as envisioned by the original design—will be 172 meters.

Coinciding with the centenary of Gaudí’s death and the completion of the Jesus Christ Tower, the Sagrada Família will thus witness an unprecedented milestone in 2026, the completion of a major construction challenge and the recognition of an exceptional man. This anniversary is not only an architectural milestone, but above all a celebration, a remembrance, and a collective tribute to a great man who, through his art, transcended the present and projected his eyes, heart, and soul into the future.
