Luxembourg city is an underrated tourist destination. The capital of the Grand Duchy has always been thought of more in terms of its image as a financial center and not as a tourist destination. We read, on some sites, that “one day is enough to see it”. But no. If we want to follow the two reasoned itineraries suggested by the Tourist Office, three days are needed, including the underground excursion to the Casemates Bock and Petrusse and at least one visit to one of the city’s cultural hubs, such as the Museum of History and Art.
Some places are unmissable, such as the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Grand Ducal Palace, Villa Vauban, Plateau du Rham (the sequence of medieval towers is beautiful), the Grund with the ancient Neimënster Abbey, the streets of the Pfaffenthal village, the spectacular Chemin de la Corniche with unmissable views from the Bock rock face. And again: the Municipal Park, the Three Towers, Fort Thungen, the Tour Jacob, the Port de Treves, the San Quirino Chapel (11th century) and the green paths along the Petrusse and the Alzette.
The historic center (Vieille Ville) is crossed by the Gran Rue, a real city lounge. The street is pedestrian only and allows a reconnaissance tour among shops and places where it is possible to purchase traditional Luxembourg products, from chocolate to porcelain and crystal. Other points of interest are the squares, such as Place d’Armes, with the elegant Cercle Citè palace and animated by clubs, bars, restaurants and outdoor concerts; the market takes place here every second and fourth Saturday of the month and, in December, the Christmas markets.
Almost parallel, here is the large Place Guillaume, dedicated to Grand Duke William II, depicted with an equestrian statue. The Hotel de Ville is located here and the Rock um Kneudler is held every year. Behind the Cathedral, the beautiful Place de Clairefontaine, with the monument to the Grand Duchess Charlotte. No, one day is not enough to visit Luxembourg city.

Lussemburgo città è una meta sottovalutata sul piano turistico. Si è sempre pensato alla capitale del Gran Ducato più alla sua immagine di centro finanziario e non come meta di turismo. Leggevamo, su alcuni siti, che “basta un giorno per vederla”. Invece no. Se vogliamo seguire i due itinerari ragionati suggeriti dall’Ufficio del Turismo, servono tre giornate, includendo l’escursione sotterranea alle Casematte Bock e Petrusse ed almeno una puntata ad uno dei poli culturali cittadini, come il Museo di storia e arte.

Alcuni luoghi sono imperdibili, come la Cattedrale di Notre Dame, il Palazzo Granducale, Villa Vauban, Plateau du Rham (bellissima la sequenza di torre medioevali), il Grund con l’antica Abbazia di Neimënster, le vie del borgo Pfaffenthal, lo spettacolare Chemin de la Corniche con imperdibili colpi d’occhio dalla parete rocciosa del Bock. E  ancora: il Parco Municipale, le Tre Torri, Fort Thungen, la Tour Jacob, la Port de Treves, la Cappella San Quirino (XI secolo) e i percorsi nel verde lungo la Petrusse e l’Alzette.         

Il centro storico (Vieille Ville) è attraversato dalla Gran Rue, vero e proprio salotto cittadino. La via è solo pedonale e consente un giro di ricognizione tra negozi e locali dove è possibile l’acquisto di prodotto tradizionali lussemburghesi, dal cioccolato alle porcellane e cristalli. Altri punti di interesse sono le piazze, come Place d’Armes, con l’elegante palazzo Cercle Citè e animata da locali, bar,  ristoranti e concerti all’aperto; qui ogni secondo e quarto sabato del mese si svolgono il mercato e, a dicembre, i mercatini natalizi.

Quasi parallela, ecco la grande Place Guillaume, dedicata al Gran Duca Guglielmo II, raffigurato con una statua equestre. Qui si trova l’Hotel de Ville e ogni anno si tiene il Rock um Kneudler. Bellissima, alle spalle della Cattedrale, la Place de Clairefontaine, con il monumento alla Gran duchessa Carlotta.
