Luxembourg the capital reveals itself and tells its story to the visitor even…underground. The breathtaking rocky overhangs thrown onto the Lower City (Grund) hide within them an archaeological and architectural wonder proclaimed as World Heritage Site by UNESCO. These are the Casemates of Bock and Petrusse: real fortifications dug into the rock, over the centuries, for defensive reasons.

Today they constitute one of the city’s major attractions. And they are truly worth a visit to the Grand Duchy. It is accessed from two distinct points of the Vieille Ville. And it is a descent into the bowels of the rock transformed by man into a refuge and place of protection. The itinerary is a spectacular up and down between tunnels arranged on several floors, connected by a system of internal ramps or very narrow spiral staircases. The tunnels go down to 40 meters deep and represent a suggestive example of defensive military architecture. In some sections, large cracks look out onto the outside with panoramic views of the valley below.

The Bock Casemates can also be admired from the outside. The most interesting observation point is from the Grund district, which in itself is worth a visit for the suggestive complex of Neimënster Abbey. The great rock wall rises in all its dizzying grandeur. An impregnable natural fortress, which allowed the Vieille Ville to resist every attack, by men and time.

Lussemburgo capitale si rivela e si racconta al visitatore anche …sottoterra. Gli strapiombi rocciosi mozzafiato gettati sulla Città Bassa (Grund) nascondono al loro interno una meraviglia archeologica ed architettonica proclamata Patrimonio dell’Umanità dall’Unesco. Si tratta delle Casematte del Bock e di Petrusse: vere e proprie fortificazioni scavate nella roccia, nel corso dei secoli, per ragioni difensive. Oggi costituiscono una delle maggiori attrattive della città. E valgono davvero una visita nel Gran Ducato. Vi si accede da due distinti punti della Vieille Ville. Ed è una discesa nelle viscere della roccia trasformata dall’uomo in rifugio e luogo di protezione. L’itinerario è un saliscendi spettacolare tra tunnel disposti su più piani, collegati da un sistema di rampe interne o da strettissime scale a chiocciola. Le gallerie scendono fino a 40 metri di profondità e rappresentano un suggestivo esempio di architettura militare difensiva. In alcuni tratti ampie fenditure danno sull’esterno con panoramici scorci sulla valle sottostante. Le Casematte del Bock possono essere ammirate anche dall’esterno. Il punto di osservazione più interessante è dal quartiere Grund, che di per sé merita una visita per il suggestivo complesso dell’Abbazia di Neimënster. La grande grande parete di roccia si eleva in tutta la sua vertiginosa imponenza. Una fortezza naturale inespugnabile, che ha consentito alla Vieille Ville di resistere ad ogni attacco, da parte degli uomini e del
