Naples holds a priceless cultural and artistic heritage and unique masterpieces that deserve to be known. Such as the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte, the heart of the ancient Basilica of Santa Restituta, today within the already extraordinary monumental complex of the Duomo. The Basilica was, with the Stefanìa, one of the ancient Cathedrals of early Christian Naples. And the Baptistery is documented as the oldest in Europe (end of the 4th century) built thirty years before that of the Lateran in Rome. It also represents the oldest testimony of mosaic art, a sign and testimony of the early Christian faith in the West.

The Baptistery presents innovative elements that will only be taken up again after almost a century by papal Rome and Byzantine Ravenna. All this is visible and present in the small baptismal temple of San Giovanni in Fonte in the Cathedral of Naples, an exceptional archaeological center (as confirmed by the excavations, which identified Greco-Roman finds) and the epicenter of Neapolitan religiosity, with the Crypt and the Treasury of Saint Gennaro. A bond, that of the city with its patron, in some respects mysterious and (in)credible. A bond that ideally continues to be renewed, twice a year, through the miracle of the dissolution of the blood contained in the ampoule venerated every day by thousands of faithful.

Napoli custodisce un patrimonio culturale e artistico inestimabile e capolavori unici che meritano di essere conosciuti. Come ad esempio il Battistero di San Giovanni in Fonte, cuore dell’antica Basilica di Santa Restituta, oggi all’interno del già straordinario complesso monumentale del Duomo. La Basilica era, con la Stefanìa, una delle antiche Cattedrali della Napoli paleocristiana. E il Battistero è documentato come il più antico d’Europa (fine del IV secolo) edificato addirittura trent’anni prima di quello del Laterano a Roma. Rappresenta anche la più antica testimonianza dell’arte del mosaico, segno e testimonianza della fede paleocristiana in Occidente.

Il Battistero presenta elementi innovativi che saranno ripresi solo dopo quasi un secolo dalla Roma papale e dalla bizantina Ravenna. Tutto questo è visibile e presente nel piccolo tempio battesimale di San Giovanni in Fonte nel Duomo di Napoli, eccezionale polo archeologico (come confermano gli scavi, che hanno individuato reperti greco-romani) ed epicentro della religiosità partenopea, con la Cripta ed il Tesoro di San Gennaro. Un legame, quello della città con il suo patrono, per certi aspetti misterioso e (in)credibile.
