Visiting Alberobello (Bari), in the evening and at night, has a very special charm. The city of trulli, known throughout the world, takes on even more the features of a fairytale dimension, which it projects into an imaginary world of houses and enchanted streets.It is not for nothing that an event is held every year: the Alberobello Light Festival, which is taking place in recent weeks. In this visit I have two special guides: prof. Felice Guardavaccaro and Prof. Sabrina Linsalata (author of “Chiudiamo il cerchio”, Funtasy Editrice).

Apulian trulli can be found here and there throughout the Valle d’Itria, but the greatest concentration of these typical rural houses is in Alberobello, where there are – according to the most accredited sources – about 1,500, concentrated above all in the districts of Aja Piccola and Monti, which constitute the “ancient heart” of the city. The origin of the trulli has not yet been fully clarified, even if the term “trullo” – derived from the Greek word “trullòs”: means dome – traces a thousand-year history that embraces the cultures of the Mediterranean.

A Unesco World Heritage Site, Alberobello is the destination of hundreds of thousands of visitors every year who, as they walk through the narrow streets, have made the stones of the road pavement smooth and slippery. The most spectacular observation point is the belvedere terrace in piazza Gian Girolamo d’Acquaviva d’Aragona. Here, the gaze truly glides over a fairytale panorama: “Perhaps the masterpiece of Puglia is indeed Alberobello. There is no tourist manual that ignores it, nor a geography book for middle schools that does not bring a photograph of its trulli.” Thus wrote Pier Paolo Pasolini, who was also enchanted, like many other poets and writers, by Alberobello, the “perfect village” which has transformed a dream into reality.

Visitare Alberobello (Bari), nelle ore serali e notturne, ha un fascino tutto particolare. La città dei trulli, nota in tutto il mondo, assume ancor più i tratti di una dimensione fiabesca, che proietta in un mondo immaginario di casette e di strade incantate. Non per niente ogni anno si tiene un evento: Alberobello Light Festival, in corso in queste settimane. In questa visita ho due guide speciali: il prof. Trulli pugliesi si incontrano qui e là in tutta la Valle d’Itria, ma la maggiore concentrazione di queste tipiche abitazioni rurali è ad Alberobello, dove se ne contano – dicono le fonti più accreditate – circa 1.500, concentrati soprattutto nei rioni di Aja Piccola e Monti, che costituiscono il “cuore antico” della città. L’origine dei trulli non è stata ancora del tutto chiarita, anche se il termine “trullo” – derivato dalla parola greca “trullòs”: significa cupola – mette sulle tracce di una storia millenaria che abbraccia le culture del Mediterraneo.      

Patrimonio dell’Umanità Unesco, Alberobello è meta ogni anni di centinaia di migliaia di visitatori che, nel camminare tra le strette vie, hanno reso lisce e scivolose le pietre della pavimentazione stradale. Il punto di osservazione più spettacolare è la terrazza belvedere in piazza Gian Girolamo d’Acquaviva d’Aragona. Qui, lo sguardo plana davvero su un panorama da fiaba: “Forse il capolavoro delle Puglie è proprio Alberobello. Non c’è manuale turistico che lo ignori, né libro di geografia per scuole medie che non porti la fotografia dei suoi trulli.” Così scrisse Pier Paolo Pasolini, anche lui incantato, come tanti altri poeti e scrittori, da Alberobello, il “paese perfetto” che ha trasformato in realtà un sogno.
