In the province of Frosinone, not far from Rome, there is a special image (and in some ways full of mystery and charm). It is an ancient fresco: the “Labyrinth of Alatri”. It is kept in the former Convent of San Francesco, dating back to 1359 and now used as an exhibition hall. Here, in a narrow decorated tunnel, there is this frescoed image (see the photogallery) absolutely among the things to see in Alatri (FR), a city to discover and get to know. The artificial and digital images with which we are often bombarded are actually “poor” compared to the extraordinary nature of the “Labyrinth of Alatri”, dating back to between the 13th and 14th centuries, at the center of an incredible story.

The fresco measures 140 x 140 cms and was discovered by chance in 1997, after centuries in which it was hidden by a wall. The presence of the image of Christ Pantocrator inside a labyrinth is considered unique in the world and the painting, without the signature of any author, is in fact also known as the “Christ in the Labyrinth”.
Another singular fact: the path of the labyrinth – called unicursal: access and exit coincide in a single point – is identical to that depicted on the floor of the ancient Cathedral of Chartres, in France. This presupposes a connection between the French city and Alatri.

At the base and sides of the labyrinth, floral elements of great charm have been frescoed together with other images that seem to recall oriental origins and symbols that would be connected to the tradition of the Knights Templar. In April 2012 the restoration was completed and a door was opened; so now it’s easy to access the narrow room where the fresco is kept as a surprising masterpiece of art.

Buona Pasqua con una immagine speciale (e per certi aspetti carica di mistero e fascino). Si tratta di un antico affresco: il “Labirinto di Alatri”. È custodito nell’ex Convento di San Francesco, risalente al 1359 e oggi adibito a sala espositiva. Qui, in un angusto cunicolo decorato, si trova questa immagine affrescata, (nella foto) assolutamente tra le cose da vedere ad Alatri (FR) città da scoprire e conoscere.

Le immagini artificiali con cui siamo spesso bombardati si fanno effettivamente “povere” rispetto alla straordinarietà del “Labirinto di Alatri”, databile tra il XIII e il XIV secolo, al centro di un’incredibile storia.
L’affresco misura 140 x 140 cm ed è stato rinvenuto casualmente nel 1997, dopo secoli in cui fu occultato da una parete muraria. La presenza dell’immagine del Cristo Pantocratore all’interno di un labirinto è considerata unica al mondo e il dipinto, senza la firma di nessun autore, è infatti noto anche come il “Cristo nel Labirinto”.
Altro fatto singolare: il percorso del labirinto – detto unicursale: accesso ed uscita coincidono in un unico punto – è identico a quello raffigurato sul pavimento dell’antica Cattedrale di Chartres, in Francia. Il che presuppone un collegamento tra la città francese e Alatri. Alla base e ai lati del labirinto sono stati affrescati elementi floreali di grande fascino insieme ad altre immagini che sembrano richiamare origini orientali e simbologie che si collegherebbero alla tradizione dei Cavalieri Templari. Ad aprile 2012 è stato completato il restauro ed è stata aperta una porta che rende più agevole l’accesso all’ambiente dove l’affresco è custodito come un sorprendente capolavoro d’arte.
