Here it is, again, before my eyes! It is the “Ghost Bus”, the vehicle from the 1950s that gave life to an innovative artistic project that unites Italy with the Land of Robin Hood. The old bus is still in Chilwell housed in the large garage of the Barton family, who here in the Middle East started and developed a cutting-edge concept of public transport.
Simon Barton, together with his son Richard and Marysia Zipser of Act (Art Culture Tourism), accompanied me again to visit the old and rusty bus, the protagonist – together with other similar vehicles – of many journeys that opened the doors of mass tourism to the English people and also the discovery of our country.
Simon has found a precious document, from a film archive: a film of almost 50 minutes which, shot in 1959, tells the story of one of these extraordinary group trips to discover Italy on board the Ghost Bus! An authentic piece of history, which unites the United Kingdom with Italy thanks to these vehicles which promoted the image of the Bel Paese. And so, thank you Simon and Richard for having once again pulled up the shutters of the Barton Depot, full of vehicles and surprising things, such as the Ghost Bus which continues to travel to the rhythm of the visual art of my project.
The visit to Barton Garage ended with a lovely walk around the nearby Barton Quarter (Phase 1). It is a new residential area: a great challenge won by Simon and his creativity projected into the future. The architectural solution is very interesting and is directly inspired by the Georgian style, characterized by essentiality, linearity and functionality (see the photos). A second lot will be built next to this first one, thus renewing the Chilwell area once animated by the comings and goings of Barton buses, which served the entire Middle East region.

Eccolo, di nuovo, sotto i miei occhi! È il “Ghost Bus”, l’Autobus Fantasma, il veicolo degli Anni Cinquanta che ha dato vita ad un Progetto artistico innovativo che unisce l’Italia alla Terra di Robin Hood. Il vecchio bus è sempre ospitato presso il grande Garage della famiglia Barton, che qui nel Middle East avviò e sviluppò una concezione all’avanguardia del trasporto pubblico. Simon Barton, insieme al figlio Richard e Marysia Zipser di Act, mi hanno riaccompagnato di nuovo a visitare il vecchio e arrugginito bus, protagonista – insieme ad altri analoghi veicoli – di tanti viaggi che aprirono agli inglesi le porte del turismo di massa e pure la scoperta del nostro Paese.
Simon ha ritrovato un documento prezioso, da cineteca: un film di quasi 50 minuti che, girato nel 1959, racconta uno di questi straordinari viaggi in comitiva alla scoperta dell’Italia a bordo del Ghost Bus! Un autentico pezzo di storia, che unisce il Regno Unito all’Italia grazie a questi veicoli che promuovevano l’immagine del Belpaese. E dunque , grazie Simon e Richard per avere di nuovo tirato su le saracinesche del Deposito Barton, ricco di veicoli e cose sorprendenti, come appunto il Ghost Bus che continua a viaggiare sul ritmo dell’arte visiva del mio progetto.
La visita al Garage Barton si è conclusa con una bella passeggiata nel vicino Barton Quarter (Fase 1). Si tratta di una nuova area residenziale: una bella sfida vinta da Simon e dal suo estro proiettato nel futuro. Molto interessante la soluzione architettonica che si ispira direttamente allo stile georgiano, caratterizzato da essenzialità, linearità e funzionalità. Accanto a questo primo lotto ne verrà costruito un secondo, rinnovando così l’area un tempo animata dal viavai dei bus Barton, che servivano l’intera regione del Middle East.
