In Cirié, a city located at the beginning of the Lanzo Valleys, in the Canavese area, in the province of Turin (Italy), history can also be read through its monuments and the urban structure of the characteristic and highly liveable historic center – it is a pedestrian area – Roman plan. A strategic place for trade and exchange, the city was a crossroads of art and culture which left a substantial heritage of famous monuments. Like the Romanesque church of San Martino, which houses frescoes and tomb steles dating back to the first century AD, as documented in the beautiful book by Elena Ala and Giuseppe Genero. Like the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista, a luminous expression of Piedmontese Gothic art, and the church of San Giuseppe, where you can admire a beautiful series of paintings by different authors. In Cirié, the ancient church of the Holy Sudarium was the seat of the first Confraternity dedicated to the Shroud, after the one founded in Chambery in France.

The beating heart of art and architecture is, today, also the magnificent Palazzo D’Oria, seat of the Municipality, which belonged to the famous Ligurian family who had it in exchange from the Savoy Royals – with an adjoining significant portion of territory – in exchange for the access to the sea of Oneglia. Today the Palace, after a redevelopment of the rooms by the municipal administration of Città Di Cirié, presents several important elements of interest. Starting from the Library, which houses thousands of ancient books and tomes, and from the Picture Gallery: the recent works have restored a highly evocative environment, aligning an exceptional collection of portraits of the members of the D’Oria family. A spectacular gallery, unique in the world, where it is possible to trace the history and evolution of costume. A Cirié, città posta allo sbocco delle Valli di Lanzo, nell’area del Canavese, la storia si legge anche attraverso i suoi monumenti e la struttura urbanistica del caratteristico e vivibilissimo centro storico – è isola pedonale – a pianta romana. Luogo strategico per commerci e scambi, la città è stata crocevia di arte e cultura che hanno lasciato un consistente patrimonio di monumenti insigni. Come la chiesa romanica di San Martino, che custodisce affreschi e stele tombali risalenti al primo secolo dopo Cristo, come documenta il bel libro di Elena Ala e Giuseppe Genero. Come il Duomo di San Giovanni Battista, luminosa espressione dell’arte gotica piemontese, e la chiesa di San Giuseppe, in cui si ammira una bella serie di tele di diversi autori. A Cirié, l’antica chiesa del Santo Sudario fu sede della prima Confraternita dedicata alla Sindone, dopo quella fondata a Chambery in Francia.

Cuore pulsante di arte e architettura è, oggi, anche il magnifico Palazzo D’Oria, sede del Comune, appartenuto alla celebre famiglia ligure che lo ebbe in permuta dai regnanti sabaudi – con annessa rilevante porzione di territorio- in cambio dello sbocco sul mare di Oneglia. Oggi il Palazzo, dopo una riqualificazione degli ambienti a cura dell’Amministrazione comunale, Città Di Cirié, presenta diversi ed importanti elementi di interesse. A partire dalla Biblioteca, che accoglie migliaia di libri e tomi antichi, e dalla Quadreria: i recenti lavori di restauro hanno restituito un ambiente di grande suggestione, allineando una eccezionale raccolta di ritratti dei componenti della famiglia D’Oria.
