Pescarenico is a small village in the city of Lecco, on the East side of wonderful Lake Como. It is magnificently described by Alessandro Manzoni at the beginning of Chapter IV of his masterpiece, “I Promessi Sposi / The Betrothed”: “Pescarenico is a small area, on the left bank of the Adda, or rather of the lake, not far from the bridge: a small group of houses , mostly inhabited by fishermen, and decorated here and there with trammel nets and nets hung out to dry.”
Even today, Pescarenico has preserved the air of the district where residents once lived from fishing, which is very rich in these parts. A few hundred meters from the shore of the lake – which here, as Manzoni writes, narrows to become a river and then, in Garlate, becomes a lake again – stands the church with the former Capuchin convent, that of Fra Cristoforo, one of the great characters in the contrasting story of Renzo and Lucia.

Nearby, there is the lakeside place from which Manzoni was inspired for one of the memorable pages of his novel, “Farewell to the Mountains”, a triumph of Manzoni’s epic, steeped in geography, visible and recognizable even today. Therefore: “ours” and “contemporary”, in the true sense of the word. This is also why “I Promessi Sposi/ The Betrothed” by Alessandro Manzoni – who passed away 150 years ago (1873) – is living literature. Pescarenico è un piccolo borgo della città di Lecco. È magnificamente descritto da Alessandro Manzoni all’Inizio del Capitolo IV del suo capolavoro, “I Promessi Sposi”: “È Pescarenico una terricciola, sulla riva sinistra dell’Adda, o vogliam dire del lago, poco discosto dal ponte: un gruppetto di case, abitate la più parte da pescatori, e addobbate qua e là di tramagli e di reti tese ad asciugare”.

Anche oggi Pescarenico ha conservato l’aria della contrada dove un tempo i residenti vivevano di pesca, molto ricca da queste parti. A poche centinaia di metri dalla riva del Lago – che qui, come scrive il Manzoni, si restringe per diventare fiume e poi, a Garlate, si fa ancora lago – sorge la chiesa con l’ex Convento dei Cappuccini, quello di Fra Cristoforo, uno dei grandi personaggi della contrastata storia di Renzo e Lucia. Nelle vicinanze, il luogo lacustre da cui Manzoni venne ispirato per una delle pagine memorabili del suo romanzo, l’ “Addio ai monti”, trionfo dell’epica manzoniana, intrisa di geografia, visibile e riconoscibile anche oggi. Dunque: “nostra” e “contemporanea”, nel vero senso della parola. Anche per questo “I Promessi Sposi” di Alessandro Manzoni – scomparso 150 anni fa (1873) – sono letteratura vivente.
